April is Earth Month, and in Sun Valley, community members are taking action. Local residents, nonprofits, and city leaders organized clean-up events across the area to reduce litter and improve neighborhood spaces.
On Saturday, April 13, volunteers gathered near the 11300 block of Sheldon Street to take part in a clean-up hosted by Pacoima Beautiful and other partners. With gloves, bags, and tools in hand, they removed trash, weeds, and bulky items from sidewalks and streets.
Environmental groups highlighted the importance of keeping neighborhoods clean not only for appearance but also to protect local wildlife and waterways. These clean-ups are part of a wider effort to bring attention to environmental justice in areas like Sun Valley, which face higher rates of pollution and illegal dumping.
Volunteers noted that many of the cleaned-up areas had been neglected for years. Debris and waste had built up, creating eyesores and health hazards. The event gave neighbors a chance to come together and take pride in their surroundings.
One resident said she felt safer walking in her neighborhood after the clean-up. Others pointed out that when areas are clean and maintained, it discourages future dumping and vandalism.
Organizers plan to continue clean-up efforts throughout April. Additional events are being scheduled in nearby neighborhoods including Pacoima, Panorama City, and North Hollywood.
Residents can visit the Pacoima Beautiful website or follow them on social media to stay informed about upcoming events and volunteer opportunities.
